The battle inspired several powerful works of art, notably Nicholas Monsarrat’s novel The Cruel Sea and Wolfgang Petersen’s film Das Boot. American troops found this film on the body of a dead Japanese man during the invasion of Hollandia in 1944. Leave plenty of time to get where you need to go. Even as the Allies evacuated at Dunkirk, Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring directed his Luftwaffe bombers inland. General Douglas MacArthur suggested a two-pronged assault on Rabaul from eastern New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, followed by invasion. There was plenty more excitement in 1964. Dearborn made headlines with “Total Performance,” an all-out assault on most every form of motor sports, a campaign designed to boost sales of racy new Fords and Mercurys for the street. Cyclists have claimed that Toronto police are participating in an unfair “enforcement blitz” in which they ticket cyclists for speeding in the park while police and politicians claim the campaign is meant to encourage road safety amid complaints. June 14: France asks the United States to intervene as the Nazis occupy Paris. April 14: Allied troops arrive in Norway to counter the German invasion force. And counter hackers have that many more devices to protect. What researchers have found is that every time we learn a new skill, solve a problem or complete a task that needed to be thought through (for example, planning your route rather than relying on your GPS mapping program to do it for you), you’re boosting your working memory. And while we might take much of it for granted, if you examine history closely, you’ll see that a lot of the current technology that we consider to be ultra modern, was actually first conceived long ago. Just as there is much to see and do in Denver, there are also many options for places to stay. Performance suspension components were included with the larger engine options. Aside from a five-speed manual transmission replacing a four-speed as standard, and the newly available four-speed automatic as an option, Bronco II saw few changes for 1985. It could look quite ritzy when dressed up with optional decor packages. Plymouth also added brash ‘Cuda packages for its sporty compact, including a formidable few with big 440s squeezed in. Britain’s RAF speaks of mythical “gremlins”: Faced with unexpected and seemingly inexplicable mechanical problems during WWII, British Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots added a supernatural, gnome-like creature to world folklore: the “gremlin.” Perhaps more than semi-seriously, pilots discussed gremlins, their mischievous expertise, and methods of placating and controlling them. They may find, for example, that the company can save 15 percent in costs by shipping via rail instead of truck. The mighty Street Hemi in intermediate Dodges and Plymouths was the recipe at its most potent. Quicker than you can say elapsed time, these smaller Dodges and Plymouths were the cars to beat in NHRA’s new Super/Stock class. Parisians eat for enjoyment, and they don’t beat themselves up about it. Custom, Monterey, and Montclair all beat the price-leader by more than 2-to-1. With that, Medalist was duly dropped, only to resurface for ’58, when it interfered in a price bracket that should have been reserved exclusively for the new Edsel. Among the various shirts, shoes, and codpieces were four examples of medieval bras that featured cups and were arguably of a better design than Jacob’s 1914 version. Chevrolet replied with SS Chevelles listing big-block 396s (actually displacing 402 cubes now) and new 454s. Tops among the latter was the rare 450-bhp LS-6 version that rocketed Hot Rod through the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 108.7 mph. The latter was perhaps symbolic of the make’s mixed fortunes in the ’60s. V-8s comprised the usual 390s and a new 429-cid big-block with 360 bhp, the latter being standard for Marauder X-100, optional elsewhere. V-8s now comprised a quartet of 390s with 250-330 bhp, plus a single 425-bhp 427. The basic ’65 look carried into 1966 with a new diecast “electric-shaver” grille and, for hardtop coupes, a “sweep-style roof” with a concave backlight.
